May 2010 Ireland DVD Rental Guide Update

Screenclick has announced a special offer good until the end of May--if you sign up with them, you'll get a half-price B&B break in a Great National Hotel. We rarely see offers along these lines, so if you're on the fence about whether to give DVD rental a try, now's a great time to try.

April 2010 Ireland DVD Rental Guide Update

There's a new DVD rental company on the scene in Ireland, with prices pretty much the same as Screenclick--DVDsDirect.ie. They have a trademark 2009, but we've only just noticed them, and they have pretty much zero mentions in web fora and the blogosphere, so we're cautious for now and will see how they develop.

February 2010 Ireland DVD Rental Guide Update

It's been awhile since we've updated the site, so we did a massive scrub, updating details throughout, including inventory sizes for various game systems for Gamesenders, etc.

Again, we don't expect many changes with only two major companies to track, but feel free to email us with any info that merits an update to our reviews.

Bright Future for DVD Rental by Post

Various tech analysts have written that US giant Netflix, whose shares have slid recently given competition from DVD kiosks and the threat of digital movie streaming, remains a strong company with a bright future, and these lessons apply just as well for Irish DVD rental. As described in this Barrons piece, analysts note the lifespan of the DVD rental market will be longer than many believe. The rental-by-mail sector will be the biggest beneficiary of the drawdown in bricks and mortar stores which has been going on for several years.

One survey found that 20% of all current Amercian non-subscribers to a DVD rental service say they plan to subscribe in the next five years. Assuming Irish are similarly inclined, that's a few hundred thousand new customers likely in the coming years.

We're in the darkest hour of DVD rental activity in Ireland--not surprising as everyone is either outside soaking up the sun or abroad this time of year--but rest assured as the cold returns, which it must, we'll still be analyzing the Irish DVD and game rental market.
