DVDsDirect.ie is a new site which may offer customers an alternative to Screenclick's monopoly in the DVD rental market. They appear to be brand new, launched probably in late 2009, but got a welcome publicity boost when cited by Connor Pope on RTE's The Afternoon Show. Unfortunately, their (undisclosed) inventory looks to be on the small side, and their site has limited functionality compared to Screenclick.
Films are listed in an impressive 17 genres (we've seen some international sites with as few as 7), which should help browsing considerably. However, the search function is basic, with a single search box and no advanced options.
The detail on the individual films is also basic, with only a box picture, one-line description, language, rating, and director listed--nothing else, including the stars.
Unlike Screenclick, DVDsDirect.ie does not offer a customer support phone line. This can mean it it's difficult to resolve any issues which crop up, as you'll have to use their contact form on the website.
Again, unlike Screenclick, there is no additional movie/entertainment content on the site--it is a no frills movie rental site only.
Worryingly, it's impossible to look at their terms and conditions without signing up, their About Us, Privacy Policy, and Press Room pages are all blank. We simply can't take this company seriously until they get themselves sorted, and certainly wouldn't recommend anyone sign up with them until they do.
Prices: DVDsDirect.ie has a 14-day free trial before you commit to subscribing. They have four unlimited rental tariffs which match Screenclick precisely: a single DVD out-at-a-time rental package is €12.99 per month, two-discs out for €17.99, three disc package is €24.99, and four discs for €31.99. They also have several limited rental tariffs to choose from.
